"STOP" ERROR MESSAGES AT SHUTDOWN

Posted by CBComputer 04.20, under , | No comments

Some users have gotten an error message similar to the following when attempting either to shutdown or restart Win XP:
STOP 0000009F, DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE
STOP 0x0000001E: KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED

STOP 0x000000D1: DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

TechNet and the Microsoft Knowledge Base have numerous articles discussing this type of error condition; for example, these. As a review of these articles will show, these are commonly device driver problems, but may also be caused by troublesome software (such as the notorious CrashGuard), or a problem in a system service. MSKB article Q262575 discusses a shutdown problem of this type, known to exist in Windows 2000 due to a resource (IRQ) conflict, if you have PACE Interlok anti-piracy software installed. This problem may occur in Windows XP as well.

Microsoft advises the following as one approach to these problems: Restart the computer. Press F8 during the restart and select “Last Known Good Configuration.” If you catch the problem when it first occurs (meaning you likely have installed only one or two drivers or new service), this will return you to a previous working condition. (Would System Restore accomplish the same thing? I don’t know, and don’t have a broken system to test it on.)

Microsoft reported similarly that these STOP code error message occur when Windows XP is trying to shut down devices. He says that he has seen this twice: once with Logitech Quickcam installed (with an unsupported driver), and once with a USB DSL modem that would hang if it wasn’t disconnected before shutdown.

Great Tips For Browsers

Posted by CBComputer 03.52, under , | No comments

Here's a great tip to speed up your browsing of Windows XP machines. Its actually a fix to a bug installedas default in Windows 2000 that scans shared files for Scheduled Tasks. And it turns out that you can experience a delay as long as 30 seconds whenyou try to view shared files across a network because Windows 2000 is usingthe extra time to search the remote computer for any Scheduled Tasks. Note thatthough the fix is originally intended for only those affected, Windows 2000 userswill experience that the actual browsing speed of both the Internet & Windows Explorersimprove significantly after applying it since it doesn't search for Scheduled Tasks anymore.

Here's how : Open up the Registry and go to : HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Microsoft/Windows/Current
Version/Explorer/RemoteComputer/NameSpace Under that branch, select the key :
{D6277990-4C6A-11CF-8D87-00AA0060F5BF} and delete it. This is key that instructs Windows to search for Scheduled Tasks. If you like you may want to export the exact branch so that you can restore the key if necessary. This fix is so effective that it doesn't require a reboot and you can almostimmediately determine yourself how much it speeds up your browsing processes.

Broader release of IE 8 coming this summer

Although anyone can now download the Internet Explorer 8 browser, Microsoft is gearing this release for Web developers. However, a second beta, slated to arrive this summer, is aimed at a wider audience, Microsoft's top browser executive told CNET News.com.

"It's public," general manager Dean Hachamovitch said of the Beta 1 released Wednesday. "It's out on Microsoft.com somewhere. Anyone can download it."
Although features like Web Slices may appeal to consumers, Hachamovitch said that "the (current) beta really is for developers."

Microsoft isn't saying when the final version of the browser will be released. Hachamovitch also declined to say whether it will be released at the same time as Windows 7, the next version of Microsoft's operating system. He did note that Microsoft released IE 7 for XP ahead of Windows Vista, so it is technically possible to do so.

As was the case with the IE 7 betas, those installing the test version of IE 8 will have to replace their current browser. The IE 8 beta will run on both 64-bit and 32-bit versions of Windows Vista and Windows Vista SP1 as well as Windows XP Service Pack 2.

Computer repair company on a mission to help.

I own B-TECH Computer Repair in Spartanburg, SC. I am not here to promote my services. While it would be nice to make a few new contacts, I wanted to let others know about two new non-profit services I am offering.
Effective immediatly, B-TECH Computer Repair now offers computer recycling for outdated computers. In addition, any computers that are salvagable will be repaired and donated to needy families.

I am often left with a computer when a customer decides to have a new computer built. As I mentioned, if the computer can be repaired it will be and then donated to a family in need. If the computer can not be salvaged it will be properly disposed of.

Computers contain dangerous chemicals such as arsenic, nickel, lithium, cadmium, chromium and mercury. Some of the plastics used in computers is PVC which is one of the most environmentally unfriendly plastics around.

In addition to that there is around 5 pounds of lead in older monitors which ends up in landfill and can possibly contaminate ground water.

Instead of just throwing your old computer in the landfill, contact me and I will see that it gets put to good use or is properly disposed of.

Tips for buying a new computer.

There are many things to consider when making your computer purchase. Hopefully this post will help you to make a more informed decision so you don't end up with a computer that can't keep up with you or something that is much more than what you needed.

The very first thing to consider is the amount of money you're willing to spend on your new computer. Next you should decide what you're going to be using this computer for. Is it for home or business use? Are you a casual websurfer? Are you a gamer? Do you plan on doing a lot of photo or video editing? Are you going to be buying a lot of music from iTunes or another service? Now that you know how much you can afford to spend and what you want to do with your new computer you can start to weed out the PC's that aren't for you.

  • If all you're going to do with your new computer is surf the internet and send email, then something with a dual core processor, 2 gigabytes of RAM and a 80 gigabyte hard drive should be perfect for you. Something like this is around the $250-300 range
  • If you're into photo/video editing, you're going to want at least a dual core processor, 512Mb of video memory, at least 2 gigabytes of RAM and at least 100 gigabyte hard drive. You can find a computer to fit these needs for around $350-400
  • If you're a music or movie enthusiast, you can get by with a computer like mentioned above, but you're going to want a larger hard drive so you don't run out of storage too soon.
  • The PC gamer will wind up spending the most money for their computer. You should look for a computer with a 64bit operating system (32 bit version of Windows won't utilize more than 3 gigabytes of RAM), a quad core processor, at least 4 gigabytes of RAM, at the very least a 512Mb video card although 1 gigabyte is recommended for newer games and at least a 500 gigabyte hard drive. Something like this can be purchased for $500-800. You can often get away with buying a nice computer with low to mid grade built in video for a little less cash and then upgrade the video capabilities with an after market PCI Express video card.
These specifications are merely suggestions and are not set in stone. There are other factors to be considered when purchasing your new computer but this will get you headed in the right direction. Do not rush to make your computer purchase otherwise you may end up having to upgrade sooner than later.

Another avenue to explore is having a computer custom built for your exact needs. This is often not as expensive as one would think. B-TECH Computer Repair specializes in custom built computers and will gladly help you make an informed decision when it comes to building a new computer.

    Print Your Hardware

Posted by CBComputer 03.49, under | No comments

Have you ever wondered what all your computer has in terms of hardware? I'm talking about everything from the motherboard to ports to controllers to drives and every other resource your computer uses to help you get your work done. Well, if you have ever wished that you could have a compiled list of this information, today is your lucky day. That's exactly what I'm going to show you!
It's very easy to print out a list of your hardware right through your computer's Device Manager (which is the utility that holds all of the information about the devices, etc. on your computer). To open the Device Manager, right click on the My Computer icon on your desktop and choose Properties. From there, click on the Hardware tab and then hit the Device Manager button. You will then see a list of all the services on your system. Now, you must click on one of the items so it is highlighted. Then go up to the Action menu and hit Print.

When the print job is done, you will probably have at least two pages, if not more, worth of listings for your computer's hardware information. Depending on your computer, you will probably have a list of your hardware, then a memory summary, a port summary, a system summary and a disk drive summary. Once you're done looking over everything, make sure you keep it in case you ever want to refer back to it. You also might want to do a print out of this every so often, just so you will have an updated list. Neato!

    Download Opera 11

Posted by CBComputer 04.59, under | No comments

Opera is the fastest Web browser available for download, Opera offers many powerful features with a new and beautiful minimalistic design, you can download it for free ( Recommended )

Its easy to say main feature of Opera 11 is extensions support than of Tab Stacking. Opera lacks behind Chrome till now due to lack of extensions support, Opera is always speedier and renders pages fast much like Chrome.

      >>> New Features >>>

1 - Tab Stackling : Dragging one tab over another allows you to create groups of tabs. Now you can keep dozens of web-pages open, organized and under control.

2 - Safer address field : The address field has been improved and now hides the complexity of long web addresses. It also provides more security information to help you stay safe when browsing; just click the badge for the website to see security information about the site you are visiting.

3 - Visual mouse gestures : Another unique feature that Opera 11 carries, the visual mouse gestures-this feature allows many common browser actions with a quick flick of your mouse. Holding down the right mouse button on a web page now shows a visual guide that indicates how to perform the available gestures. This particular feature may feel a little odd in the beginning but once you get used to it,you’ll love it.Here, see it in action in the video below.

4 - Extensions : It is simple to extend Opera's functionality by visiting our extensions catalog. Some extensions create a button you can click or have menus, while others just work in the background.

5 - Mail panel : When using Opera's built-in mail client, you now can now drag accounts and mail items where you want them. The mail panel can also hide when you are not viewing a mail tab.

10 tips for securing your PC

Posted by CBComputer 03.43, under , | No comments

    1. Update / patch ALL your software every now and then!
    2. Check / adjust ALL your settings so they are safe, since they ARENT by default!
    3. Use firewall, like ZoneAlarm!
    4. Use good passwords: at least 13marks long, containing both letters and numbers. Remember to chance your password every few months atleast!
    5. Get good anti-virus & Spyware softwares and keep it updated!
    6. Don’t open or execute files that you are not 100% sure are absolutely safe no matter where or how you get them
    7. Wipe your historyfiles (like cookies, internet history and temporary files, etc.), logs and personal files, with specific wiping program (like Eraser) instead of just deleting them.
    8. Use encryption to enhance your privacy! Use encrypted email (like Hushmail or Ziplip) and encrypt sensitive files on your computer (PGP).
    9. Don’t use public computers for anything you need to type in your logins, they usually have Trojan horses that capture your passwords.
    10. Don’t assume anything. If you don’t know, find out! If you cant or don’t understand, ask someone who knows! There’s nothing more dangerous than doing something you don’t really know anything about. That’s the best way to cripple your system or get a Trojan horse on your computer!

          Google looking to aquire Twitter

Posted by CBComputer 02.32, under , | No comments

Biz Stone, the co-founder of microblogging service Twitter responded to speculation that his company is in talks with Google on Friday but did little to squash the rumors.

"It should come as no surprise that Twitter engages in discussions with other companies regularly and on a variety of subjects," Stone wrote in a blog post. "Our goal is to build a profitable, independent company and we're just getting started." TechCrunch reported that Google is currently in "late stage" talks to acquire the company, which recently was valued at $250 million.

This news comes not long after Twitter turned down an offer by Facebook, thought to be worth around $500 million. Other sources believe that the talks may lead to a partnership between the companies. What would that mean for Twitter? How much if any would Google change the service?

Twitter currently has just over 30 employees and works out of a loft in San Francisco.
