DLC finally coming to Fall Out 3 on PS3

Posted by CBComputer 04.42, under | No comments

     Finally.......

I was pleasantly surprised to find out that Bethesda has finally announced they plan to release DLC for Fall Out on the PlayStation 3. Myself and many others felt left out and downright angry when only Xbox 360 and PC users were the only ones to get exclusive DLC a few months ago. Now, it seems that our cries have been heard as we will be getting the coveted DLC sometime in June.

No specific release dates have been announced, but Operation: Anchorage is scheduled to go live on the PlayStation Network in late June, with "The Pitt" and "Broken Steel" getting released "4-6 weeks apart." A new patch update for Fallout 3 will be released for the PS3 to pave the way for these DLC.

Last we heard, Broken Steel was to be the last DLC for Fallout 3, now it seems there's not just one but two new DLC add-ons! Even better, the following two DLC will be released across all three platform versions of Fallout 3:

Mothership Zeta – "The aliens have returned, and they’re pissed. Experience an alien abduction first hand and find out if you’re tough enough to survive."
Point Lookout – "Explore a massive new swampland area filled with new quests and content."

So, let us rejoice and hope that the wait was worth it.

Voice your opinion about Windows 7

Posted by CBComputer 01.54, under | No comments

Microsoft has created a website which right now is mostly being used as an advertising tool for Windows 7 in which IT Professionals and Microsoft developers are talking about how great Windows 7 is. Technicians have the ability to give the Microsoft devs feedback on Windows 7 and hopefully help make it a better product.

There are some videos to check out and you can then comment to the developers about the features and new ideas in Windows 7.

If you have tried Windows 7 (which I currently am), leave some feedback. If you haven't, you can get it here Check it out and then leave some feedback. This is important so we don't end up with another of what many regard as a real stinker (Vista)

The sites URL is: http://www.TalkingAboutWindows.com & requires the Microsoft Silverlight plugin to run.

Broader release of IE 8 coming this summer

Although anyone can now download the Internet Explorer 8 browser, Microsoft is gearing this release for Web developers. However, a second beta, slated to arrive this summer, is aimed at a wider audience, Microsoft's top browser executive told CNET News.com.

"It's public," general manager Dean Hachamovitch said of the Beta 1 released Wednesday. "It's out on Microsoft.com somewhere. Anyone can download it."
Although features like Web Slices may appeal to consumers, Hachamovitch said that "the (current) beta really is for developers."

Microsoft isn't saying when the final version of the browser will be released. Hachamovitch also declined to say whether it will be released at the same time as Windows 7, the next version of Microsoft's operating system. He did note that Microsoft released IE 7 for XP ahead of Windows Vista, so it is technically possible to do so.

As was the case with the IE 7 betas, those installing the test version of IE 8 will have to replace their current browser. The IE 8 beta will run on both 64-bit and 32-bit versions of Windows Vista and Windows Vista SP1 as well as Windows XP Service Pack 2.

Computer repair company on a mission to help.

Computer repair company on a mission to help.

I own B-TECH Computer Repair in Spartanburg, SC. I am not here to promote my services. While it would be nice to make a few new contacts, I wanted to let others know about two new non-profit services I am offering.
Effective immediatly, B-TECH Computer Repair now offers computer recycling for outdated computers. In addition, any computers that are salvagable will be repaired and donated to needy families.

I am often left with a computer when a customer decides to have a new computer built. As I mentioned, if the computer can be repaired it will be and then donated to a family in need. If the computer can not be salvaged it will be properly disposed of.

Computers contain dangerous chemicals such as arsenic, nickel, lithium, cadmium, chromium and mercury. Some of the plastics used in computers is PVC which is one of the most environmentally unfriendly plastics around.

In addition to that there is around 5 pounds of lead in older monitors which ends up in landfill and can possibly contaminate ground water.

Instead of just throwing your old computer in the landfill, contact me and I will see that it gets put to good use or is properly disposed of.

Tips for buying a new computer.

There are many things to consider when making your computer purchase. Hopefully this post will help you to make a more informed decision so you don't end up with a computer that can't keep up with you or something that is much more than what you needed.

The very first thing to consider is the amount of money you're willing to spend on your new computer. Next you should decide what you're going to be using this computer for. Is it for home or business use? Are you a casual websurfer? Are you a gamer? Do you plan on doing a lot of photo or video editing? Are you going to be buying a lot of music from iTunes or another service? Now that you know how much you can afford to spend and what you want to do with your new computer you can start to weed out the PC's that aren't for you.

  • If all you're going to do with your new computer is surf the internet and send email, then something with a dual core processor, 2 gigabytes of RAM and a 80 gigabyte hard drive should be perfect for you. Something like this is around the $250-300 range
  • If you're into photo/video editing, you're going to want at least a dual core processor, 512Mb of video memory, at least 2 gigabytes of RAM and at least 100 gigabyte hard drive. You can find a computer to fit these needs for around $350-400
  • If you're a music or movie enthusiast, you can get by with a computer like mentioned above, but you're going to want a larger hard drive so you don't run out of storage too soon.
  • The PC gamer will wind up spending the most money for their computer. You should look for a computer with a 64bit operating system (32 bit version of Windows won't utilize more than 3 gigabytes of RAM), a quad core processor, at least 4 gigabytes of RAM, at the very least a 512Mb video card although 1 gigabyte is recommended for newer games and at least a 500 gigabyte hard drive. Something like this can be purchased for $500-800. You can often get away with buying a nice computer with low to mid grade built in video for a little less cash and then upgrade the video capabilities with an after market PCI Express video card.
These specifications are merely suggestions and are not set in stone. There are other factors to be considered when purchasing your new computer but this will get you headed in the right direction. Do not rush to make your computer purchase otherwise you may end up having to upgrade sooner than later.

Another avenue to explore is having a computer custom built for your exact needs. This is often not as expensive as one would think. B-TECH Computer Repair specializes in custom built computers and will gladly help you make an informed decision when it comes to building a new computer.

Google looking to aquire Twitter

Posted by CBComputer 02.32, under , | No comments

Biz Stone, the co-founder of microblogging service Twitter responded to speculation that his company is in talks with Google on Friday but did little to squash the rumors.

"It should come as no surprise that Twitter engages in discussions with other companies regularly and on a variety of subjects," Stone wrote in a blog post. "Our goal is to build a profitable, independent company and we're just getting started." TechCrunch reported that Google is currently in "late stage" talks to acquire the company, which recently was valued at $250 million.

This news comes not long after Twitter turned down an offer by Facebook, thought to be worth around $500 million. Other sources believe that the talks may lead to a partnership between the companies. What would that mean for Twitter? How much if any would Google change the service?

Twitter currently has just over 30 employees and works out of a loft in San Francisco.

How to crack WPA wireless networks

Posted by CBComputer 01.11, under ,, | No comments

WPA is an encryption algorithm that takes care of a lot of the vunerablities inherent in WEP. WEP is, by design, flawed. No matter how good or crappy, long or short, your WEP key is, it can be cracked. WPA is different. A WPA key can be made good enough to make cracking it unfeasible. WPA is also a little more cracker friendly. By capturing the right type of packets, you can do your cracking offline. This means you only have to be near the AP for a matter of seconds to get what you need. Advantages and disadvantages.
WPA Flavours
WPA basically comes in two flavours RADIUS or PSK. PSK is crackable, RADIUS is not so much.

PSK uses a user defined password to initialize the TKIP, temporal key integrity protocol. There is a password and the user is involved, for the most part that means it is flawed. The TKIP is not really crackable as it is a per-packet key but upon the initialization of the TKIP, like during an authentication, we get the password (well the PMK anyways). A robust dictionary attack will take care of a lot of consumer passwords.
Radius involves physical transferring of the key and encrypted channels blah blah blah, look it up to learn more about it but 90% of commerical APs do not support it, it is more of an enterprise solution then a consumer one.

The Handshake
The WPA handshake was designed to occur over insecure channels and in plaintext so the password is not actually sent across. There are some fancy dancy algorithms in the background that turn it into a primary master key, PMK, and the like but none of that really matters cause the PMK is enough to connect to the network.
The only step we need to do is capture a full authenication handshake from a real client and the AP. This can prove tricky without some packet injection, but if you are lucky to capture a full handshake, then you can leave and do the rest of the cracking at home.
We can force an authenication handshake by launching a Deauthentication Attack, but only if there is a real client already connected (you can tell in airodump). If there are no connected clients, you’re outta luck.
Like for WEP, we want to know the channel the WPA is sitting on, but the airodump command is slightly different. We don’t want just IVs so we don’t specify an IV flag. This will produce “lucid.cap” instead of “lucid.ivs”. Assume WPA is on channel 6 and wireless interface is ath0.
./airodump ath0 lucid 6

Dictionary Brute Force
The most important part of brute forcing a WPA password is a good dictionary. Check out http://www.openwall.com/wordlists/ for a ‘really’ good one. It costs money, but it’s the biggest and best I’ve ever seen (40 Million words, no duplicates, one .txt file). There is also a free reduced version from the same site but i’m sure resourceful people can figure out where to get a good dictionary from.
When you have a good dictionary the crack is a simple brute force attack:
./aircrack -a 2 -b 00:23:1F:55:04:BC -w /path/to/wordlist
Either you’ll get it or you won’t… depends on the strength of the password and if a dictionary attack can crack it.
