Computer repair company on a mission to help.

I own B-TECH Computer Repair in Spartanburg, SC. I am not here to promote my services. While it would be nice to make a few new contacts, I wanted to let others know about two new non-profit services I am offering.
Effective immediatly, B-TECH Computer Repair now offers computer recycling for outdated computers. In addition, any computers that are salvagable will be repaired and donated to needy families.

I am often left with a computer when a customer decides to have a new computer built. As I mentioned, if the computer can be repaired it will be and then donated to a family in need. If the computer can not be salvaged it will be properly disposed of.

Computers contain dangerous chemicals such as arsenic, nickel, lithium, cadmium, chromium and mercury. Some of the plastics used in computers is PVC which is one of the most environmentally unfriendly plastics around.

In addition to that there is around 5 pounds of lead in older monitors which ends up in landfill and can possibly contaminate ground water.

Instead of just throwing your old computer in the landfill, contact me and I will see that it gets put to good use or is properly disposed of.

Tips for buying a new computer.

There are many things to consider when making your computer purchase. Hopefully this post will help you to make a more informed decision so you don't end up with a computer that can't keep up with you or something that is much more than what you needed.

The very first thing to consider is the amount of money you're willing to spend on your new computer. Next you should decide what you're going to be using this computer for. Is it for home or business use? Are you a casual websurfer? Are you a gamer? Do you plan on doing a lot of photo or video editing? Are you going to be buying a lot of music from iTunes or another service? Now that you know how much you can afford to spend and what you want to do with your new computer you can start to weed out the PC's that aren't for you.

  • If all you're going to do with your new computer is surf the internet and send email, then something with a dual core processor, 2 gigabytes of RAM and a 80 gigabyte hard drive should be perfect for you. Something like this is around the $250-300 range
  • If you're into photo/video editing, you're going to want at least a dual core processor, 512Mb of video memory, at least 2 gigabytes of RAM and at least 100 gigabyte hard drive. You can find a computer to fit these needs for around $350-400
  • If you're a music or movie enthusiast, you can get by with a computer like mentioned above, but you're going to want a larger hard drive so you don't run out of storage too soon.
  • The PC gamer will wind up spending the most money for their computer. You should look for a computer with a 64bit operating system (32 bit version of Windows won't utilize more than 3 gigabytes of RAM), a quad core processor, at least 4 gigabytes of RAM, at the very least a 512Mb video card although 1 gigabyte is recommended for newer games and at least a 500 gigabyte hard drive. Something like this can be purchased for $500-800. You can often get away with buying a nice computer with low to mid grade built in video for a little less cash and then upgrade the video capabilities with an after market PCI Express video card.
These specifications are merely suggestions and are not set in stone. There are other factors to be considered when purchasing your new computer but this will get you headed in the right direction. Do not rush to make your computer purchase otherwise you may end up having to upgrade sooner than later.

Another avenue to explore is having a computer custom built for your exact needs. This is often not as expensive as one would think. B-TECH Computer Repair specializes in custom built computers and will gladly help you make an informed decision when it comes to building a new computer.

History Internet Protocol

Posted by CBComputer 01.14, under | No comments

The Internet Protocol Suite resulted from work done by Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) in the early 1970s. After building the pioneering ARPANET in 1969, DARPA started work on a number of other data transmission technologies. In 1972, Robert E. Kahn was hired at the DARPA Information Processing Technology Office, where he worked on both satellite packet networks and ground-based radio packet networks, and recognized the value of being able to communicate across them. In the spring of 1973, Vinton Cerf, the developer of the existing ARPANET Network Control Program (NCP) protocol, joined Kahn to work on open-architecture interconnection models with the goal of designing the next protocol generation for the ARPANET.

By the summer of 1973, Kahn and Cerf had worked out a fundamental reformulation, where the differences between network protocols were hidden by using a common internetwork protocol, and instead of the network being responsible for reliability, as in the ARPANET, the hosts became responsible. Cerf credits Hubert Zimmerman and Louis Pouzin, designer of the CYCLADES network, with important influences on this design.
With the role of the network reduced to the bare minimum, it became possible to join almost any networks together, no matter what their characteristics were, thereby solving Kahn's initial problem. One popular saying has it that TCP/IP, the eventual product of Cerf and Kahn's work, will run over "two tin cans and a string." There is even an implementation designed to run using homing pigeons, IP over Avian Carriers, documented in RFC 1149.

A computer called a router (a name changed from gateway to avoid confusion with other types of gateways) is provided with an interface to each network, and forwards packets back and forth between them. Requirements for routers are defined in (Request for Comments 1812).

The idea was worked out in more detailed form by Cerf's networking research group at Stanford in the 1973–74 period, resulting in the first TCP specification (Request for Comments 675) [6] (The early networking work at Xerox PARC, which produced the PARC Universal Packet protocol suite, much of which existed around the same period of time (i.e. contemporaneous), was also a significant technical influence; people moved between the two).

DARPA then contracted with BBN Technologies, Stanford University, and the University College London to develop operational versions of the protocol on different hardware platforms. Four versions were developed: TCP v1, TCP v2, a split into TCP v3 and IP v3 in the spring of 1978, and then stability with TCP/IP v4 — the standard protocol still in use on the Internet today.

In 1975, a two-network TCP/IP communications test was performed between Stanford and University College London (UCL). In November, 1977, a three-network TCP/IP test was conducted between the U.S., UK, and Norway. Between 1978 and 1983, several other TCP/IP prototypes were developed at multiple research centers. A full switchover to TCP/IP on the ARPANET took place January 1, 1983.

In March 1982, the US Department of Defense made TCP/IP the standard for all military computer networking. In 1985, the Internet Architecture Board held a three day workshop on TCP/IP for the computer industry, attended by 250 vendor representatives, helping popularize the protocol and leading to its increasing commercial use.

On November 9, 2005 Kahn and Cerf were presented with the Presidential Medal of Freedom for their contribution to American culture.
